Fulbourn Fen Nature Reserve

The Wildlife Trust in Cambridgeshire have had to make the difficult decision to close a part of Fulbourn Fen nature reserve for a temporary period to protect wildlife and livestock, and to keep staff and volunteers safe. This privately owned site is managed for the benefit of nature by the Wildlife Trust. The Trust want visitors to enjoy this reserve and the wildlife it supports, however issues with a minority of dog owners have made this very difficult.

Dog owners are requested to keep their dogs on a leash at all times on this reserve to protect birds and other wildlife. Dog waste causes a health risk to visitors and impacts the wildflowers this reserve is managed for.

Trust staff, volunteers and members of the public have been on the receiving end of aggressive behaviour from some dog owners who have refused to put their dogs on leads when politely asked to do so, or pick up and dispose of their dog’s waste. These confrontations can be intimidating and frightening, and we don’t believe our staff, volunteers or the responsible visitors that value the nature here, should be subjected to them.

To protect the habitat and grazing livestock we will be closing permissive access to the fields until early December. Public access to Ansett’s Wood remains in place.

We would like to apologise to responsible dog owners and other visitors who care for and enjoy this site. Our priority is the protection of wildlife and the safety and wellbeing of our staff and volunteers.
